I’ve always wondered about the science behind making an educated guess for MCQ questions, especially if you have absolutely no clue about or just want to confirm your answer. I finally stumbled upon this cool article on the net which I want to repost and share (use at your own risk).

Intelligent MCQ Guessing

  • Alternatives with absolute or universal qualifiers are usually wrong (“all”, “every”, “never”, “in no case”, “in every case”, etc.)
  • Alternatives that seem impossible or that seem completely unrelated to the question are usually wrong (watch out for alternatives that are true, but have nothing to do with the question).
  • If two or more alternatives say the same thing, each is probably wrong (you can have two that are wrong, but not two that are right on m/c tests).
  • The answer to one question is sometimes given away in another question (tests contain a lot of information – use it).
  • When 3 or more alternatives deal in different ways with one concept, one of them is usually right. The instructor usually doesn’t waste 3 alternatives on single incorrect concept. In this case, he or she most likely wants to have you discriminate knowledge.
  • If two answers contain a similar sounding word, such as “subordination” and “subrogation,” choose one of these.
  • If two answers are almost identical except for a few words, choose one of these.
  • If two answers seem extreme, they should be eliminated, and a guess made as to the remaining answers. As an example, if the answer is to be a number, and 3, 57, 89, 1103 are the choices given, you should eliminate the 3 and 1103, and take a guess at one of the remaining choices.
  • If you are unable to eliminate any answer on a 4 answer question, choose the third. Experience has shown that it has a better than 25% chance of being the correct answer.
  • Don’t try to apply definitions from outside the course. Answer the questions found on your lecture and class reading; not based on educational knowledge that you have.
  • Never argue with a question. Accept it at face value.
  • When all else fails:
    1. choose the alternative that makes the best sentence, when added to the open-ended question.
    2. look for subject-verb agreement.
    3. know the instructor’s quirks of language.
    4. choose the longer answer. The instructor may have used more words to make the answer precise; thus the most correct.
  • None of these rules works all the time, so use them only if you must.

My reflection on my view of gray areas:

When you are thinking of doing something (gray area) that the Bible doesn’t state whether is right or wrong, ask yourself whether does it glorify God and whether it will stumble yourself and others around you.

After reflecting, I went ahead and use the power of Google to find this good article on the net regarding gray areas, and to summarize its key points:

Will it benefit me spiritually?
All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify. (1 Cor. 10:23)

Will it bring bondage?
All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. (1 Cor. 6:12)

Will it defile God’s temple?
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body. (1 Cor. 6:19-20)

Will it cause anyone to stumble?
Food will not commend us to God; we are neither the worse if we do not eat, nor the better if we do eat. But take care lest this liberty of yours somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. (1 Cor. 8:8-9)

Will it further the cause of evangelism?
Give no offense either to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God; just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of the many, that they may be saved. (1 Cor. 10:32-33)

Will it violate my conscience?
He who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin. (Rom. 14:23)

Will it bring glory to God?
Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Dear Math, I Don’t Want To Solve Your Problems, I Have My Own To Solve

RICHMOND (Virginia) – LUKE Soules was one of the first on the planet to get his hands on an iPad. And he wasted no time taking it apart.

After staking out three locations in the Eastern United States, Mr Soules – co-founder of teardown firm iFixit – cracked the device open on Saturday to unearth Nand flash memory by Samsung Electronics, an LCD display from LG Display and microchips from Broadcom Corp, Texas Instruments Inc and NXP Semiconductor.

Mr Soules and his outfit provide and advise on components in Apple gadgets – and also identifies them. The work of teardown firms such as iFixit may prove crucial in identifying which manufacturer gets its parts into a device expected to sell upwards of 5 million units in 2010 alone. Mr Soules had slept overnight in the parking lot outside an Apple mall store in Richmond, Virginia. He was the first to walk out of the store, moments after the outlet opened at 9am, iPad in hand.

Store employees clapped and gave him high-fives. He grinned, but moved quickly. There was work to do. Without a second’s dawdling, Mr Soules hopped in a waiting car and raced a few short miles to the house of a friend, where he had his tools of destruction ready to go. He barely paused to admire the iPad out of the box. He didn’t even turn it on.

The secretive Apple is famous for designing sealed-up devices intended to discourage nosy gadget heads from poking around in them, and the iPad was no different.

The iPad had no screws. But working with a tool called a spudger, it took Mr Soules only 10 minutes to separate the iPad’s handsome, 9.7-inch facing from its silver-backed casing. He surveyed the iPad’s design, a maze of parts that would be utterly inscrutable to most people. ‘That’s very, very nice,’ he said almost reverentially. — REUTERS

How would u know if u are with the right person? Here’s the answer.

EVERY relationship has a cycle. In the beginning, you fell in love with your other half. You anticipated their call, wanted their touch, and liked their idiosyncrasies.

Falling in love with your boyfriend wasn’t hard. In fact, it was a completely natural and spontaneous experience. You didn’t have to DO anything. That’s why it’s called “falling” in love… Because it’s happening TO YOU.

People in love sometimes say, “I was swept of my feet.” Think about the imagery of that expression. It implies that you were just standing there; doing nothing, and then something came along and happened TO YOU.

Falling in love is easy. It’s a passive and spontaneous experience. But after a few years of relationship, the euphoria of love fades. It’s the natural cycle of EVERY relationship. Slowly but surely, phone calls become a bother (if they come at all), touch is not always welcome (when it happens), and your spouse’s idiosyncrasies, instead of being cute, drive you nuts.

The symptoms of this stage vary with every relationship, but if you think about it, you will notice a dramatic difference between the initial stage when you were in love and a much duller or even angry subsequent stage.

At this point, you and/or your boyfriend might start asking, “Am I with the right person?” And as you and your spouse reflect on the euphoria of the love you once had, you may begin to desire that experience with someone else. This is when relationships breakdown. People blame their other half for their unhappiness and look outside their relationship for fulfillment.

Fulfillment outside the relationship comes in all shapes and sizes. Infidelity is the most obvious. But sometimes people turn to work, church, a hobby, a friendship, excessive TV, or abusive substances. But the answer to this dilemma does NOT lie outside your relationship. It lies within it. I’m not saying that you couldn’t fall in love with someone else. You could. And TEMPORARILY you’d feel better. But you’d be in the same situation a few years later. Because (listen carefully to this):

THE KEY TO SUCCEEDING IN A RELATIONSHIP IS NOT FINDING THE RIGHT PERSON; IT’S LEARNING TO LOVE THE PERSON YOU FOUND.

SUSTAINING love is not a passive or spontaneous experience. It’ll NEVER just happen to you. You can’t “find” LASTING love. You have to “make” it day in and day out. That’s why we have the _expression “the labor of love.” Because it takes time, effort, and energy. And most importantly, it takes WISDOM. You have to know WHAT TO DO to make your relationship work.

Make no mistake about it. Love is NOT a mystery. There are specific things you can do (with or without your boyfriend) to succeed with your love life. Just as there are physical laws of the universe (such as gravity), there are also laws for relationships. Just as the right diet and exercise program makes you physically stronger, certain habits in your relationship WILL make it stronger. It’s a direct cause and effect. If you know and apply the laws, the results are predictable… you can “make” love.

Love in relationships are indeed a “decision”… Not just a feeling.
