Despite what some detractors say, torrents have plenty of legitimate uses — one of which is helping organizations distribute digital content at little or no cost. That’s especially important for a non-profit like Khan Academy, which is why its partnership with BitTorrent Inc. makes perfect sense.

Khan Academy is a provider of free, online educational videos. A wide range of subjects are covered, including physics, biology, trigonometry, calculus, and economics. The academy’s vault currently includes more than 2,000 videos, and all are now accessible via BitTorrent apps. Founder Salman Khan told TorrentFreak, “BitTorrent is a great platform to help us fulfill our mission of providing world-class education to anyone, anywhere.”

If you’ve got either uTorrent or BitTorrent installed, just install the Khan Academy app and get studying! Best of all, you’ll also be helping out by seeding content and giving back to the community while you watch.

The internet is full of BitTorrent search engines, but what if you’re just trying to decide what your weekend movie should be? TorrentButler presents new releases in a visually attractive fasion, linking to standard and high definition torrents for each.

The problem with most torrent sites is that they don’t offer a lot of ways to just browse around the catalog. If you want to download something, you have to know what you’re looking for. If you just want to just see what’s out there, web site TorrentButler is a web site that is, essentially, just a giant mosaic of movie posters. You can filter them by popularity, genre, or date released, and search through them if you get an idea of what you’re looking for. Clicking on a poster will link you to that movie’s page, which contains a movie trailer, description, and links to a number of high and standard definition torrents.

Apart from the convenience of being able to actually browse new releases, this site is gorgeous—almost like XBMC for the web (notice the fanart-like view for the movie page to the left). Even if you’re not a BitTorrenter, this site is pretty sweet for browsing new releases and deciding on your weekend movie—much better than making the trek out to Blockbuster. Hit the link to check it out.

Today I took a look at my website/blog stats, and wow, the visitors to my website prefers to use Firefox to IE. IE has been losing ‘support’ since two plus years ago, and it still is. This is because IE tends to crash/give more problems much more than Firefox, and Firefox is user-friendly, easier to customize and less prone to virus/spyware.

For me, these are the add-ons that I have installed on Firefox, and I recommend you try them out as it really increases productivity.

Adblock Plus
- Ever been annoyed by all those ads and banners on the internet that often take longer to download than everything else on the page? Right-click on a banner and choose “Adblock” from the context menu – the banner won’t be downloaded again. (samliew: you save bandwidth too!) Maybe even replace parts of the banner address with star symbols to block similar banners as well. Or you select a filter subscription when Adblock Plus starts up the first time, then even this simple task will usually be unnecessary: the filter subscription will block most advertisements fully automatically.

AutoPager
- The AutoPager Firefox extension automatically loads the next page of a site inline when you reach the end of the current page for infinite scrolling of content. (samliew: Works with most popular sites, but you also can create rules for your favorite sites to automatically load the next few pages.)

Better Gmail 2
- Better Gmail 2 is a compilation of Greasemonkey user scripts that add features to Gmail. Add useful extra features to Gmail, like hierarchical labels, macros, file-type attachment icons, row highlights, and more.

British English Dictionary
- Automatically spell checks whatever you type like a word processor.

Download Statusbar
- View and manage downloads from a tidy statusbar – without the download window getting in the way of your web browsing. (samliew: highly recommended! install this and disable the default Firefox download window.)

FlashGot
- Download all the links, movies and audio clips of a page at the maximum speed with a single click, using the most popular, lightweight and reliable external download managers. (samliew: works well with the above plug-in. I use this to download YouTube videos and embedded MP3 from websites)

Greasemonkey
- Allows you to customize the way a webpage displays using small bits of JavaScript script. Hundreds of scripts, for a wide variety of popular sites, are already available at http://www.userscripts.org (samliew: if you read manga at www.onemanga.com, install my onemangahelper script)

Greasefire
- If you installed the above plug-in, now you can get scripts for whatever page you visit on the fly. When you visit a web page that has compatible user scripts on userscripts.org, this extension will highlight the Greasemonkey icon in the status bar.

PDF Download
- This plug-in allows you to choose what you want to do with PDF files when you click on a link to it, either viewing as PDF, downloading it, or letting the company convert it to HTML for you (free!).

The easy to use, customizable application helps you copy, move, rename, and delete files between folders and computers.

There are files from all kinds of sources that we want to store and manage. Files are created by our digital cameras, e-mail, cell phones, portable media players, camcorders, PDAs, and laptops. Increasingly, computer users are using different folders, drives, and even different computers (such as a laptop and a desktop) to store, manage, retrieve and view files. Yet managing hundreds or thousands of files is still largely a manual operation. In some cases it is necessary to regularly get copies of files from another location to add to primary location; in other cases there is a need to keep two storage locations exactly in sync. Some users manage files manually, dragging and dropping from one place to another and keeping track of whether the locations are synchronized in their heads. Other users may use two or more applications to provide this functionality.

Now there is an easier way. SyncToy, a free PowerToy for Microsoft Windows, is an easy to use, highly customizable program that helps users to do the heavy lifting involved with the copying, moving, and synchronization of different directories. Most common operations can be performed with just a few clicks of the mouse, and additional customization is available without additional complexity. SyncToy can manage multiple sets of folders at the same time; it can combine files from two folders in one case, and mimic renames and deletes in another case. Unlike other applications, SyncToy actually keeps track of renames to files and will make sure those changes get carried over to the synchronized folder.

We have collected feedback from the discussion forum on the Windows XP Professional Photography web site, from customer feedback surveys, from a large number of professional and hobbyist photographers at Microsoft, and from various world-wide forums, sites, reviews and blogs on the web. Based on your feedback, the following features were added to this release of SyncToy:

Dynamic Drive Letter Assignment: Drive letter reassignment will now be detected and updated in the folder pair definition.

True Folder Sync: Folder creates, renames and deletes are now synchronized for all SyncToy actions.

Exclusion Filtering Based on Name: File exclusion based on name with exact or fuzzy matching.

Filtering Based on File Attributes: The ability to exclude files based on one or more file attributes (Read-Only, System, Hidden).

Unattended Folder Pair Execution: Addressed issues related to running scheduled folder pairs while logged off.

Folder Pairs With Shared Endpoints: Ability for folder pairs associated with the same or different instances of SyncToy to share end-points.

Command line enhancements: Added the ability to manage folder pairs via the command line interface.

The SyncToy engine has been rearchitected to provide scalability and the ability to add significant enhancements in future releases.

Sync engine is also more robust insomuch that many single, file level errors are skipped without affecting the entire sync operation.

Sync Encrypted Files: Sync of Encrypted files works when local folder and files are encrypted, which addresses the common scenario involving sync between local, encrypted laptop PC folder and remote, unencrypted desktop PC folder.

64-Bit compatibility

Folder pair rename

Sub-folder Exclusion Enhancements: Descendents creates under excluded sub-folders are automatically excluded.

Folder Pair Metadata Moved: Folder pair metadata removed from MyDocuments to resolve any issues with server-based folder pair re-direction setup.

Removed combine and subscribe actions.
